I had read the reviews about how everyone seemed to LOVE this book. Having done mission work internationally for 8 years now, I thought it would be right up my alley. The thing I didn’t like was that it was slanted severely to the left. Very anti Bush, pro Obama. They talked about funding being cut by Bush for an organization that supported forced abortions in China, but also did good things in Africa for women. I agree with what he did! On the other hand, I liked that they did give credit to the Catholic Church for it’s work around the world. It seems that goes unsaid many times these days. It was more of a travel log, and I actually wished it would have gone deeper into the stories of the women and less into “numbers” that may or may not be accurate. So, I liked it but it wasn’t as good as they said it was on Oprah!

Read it and pass the word on! Haven’t read such an inspirational book for a long time – actually EVER!

I have long been a fan of Kristof, through his New York Times column, so I was anxious to get this book. The stories within it are gut-wrenching and inspirational. I thought I knew a lot about the oppression and abuse of women around the world, but I learned quite a few new things, including the prevalence of fistula. The best thing about the book is that after it raises a sense of urgency, it gives the reader concrete ways that each of us may help to end the occurence of the various problems. Much thanks to Kristof and WuDunn for their efforts!
P.S. This reads well on the Kindle.

This book is well-written and incredibly inspiring. I highly recommend it for anyone interested in feminism, “third-world” development, or human rights issues – or anyone looking for a good read!

Kristoff and WuDunn are amazing. They bravely report to us what we all need to know, from so many parts of the globe. Such an interesting read in addition to a call to action.
